Georgetown Graduates Thousands of Students During Commencement 2019

May 20, 2019 – The university graduated more than 6,000 students during Commencement Weekend, May 16-19, at Georgetown.

“Hold on to your excitement,” President John J. DeGioia told more than 1,750 undergraduate students Thursday afternoon at Senior Convocation. “Trust that you have developed the abilities and self-knowledge that will enable you to engage your challenges and to overcome them.”

Graduation ceremonies began Thursday afternoon with Senior Convocation and ended with the School of Medicine and Georgetown Law ceremonies on Sunday.

Senior Convocation

The graduating seniors, who hail from 48 states and at least 68 other nations, marched together in the processional May 16 for Senior Convocation in McDonough Arena, where they began their journey four years earlier at New Student Convocation.

The keynote speaker for Senior Convocation was Brian Ferguson (C’18), a Marshall Scholar heading to Oxford University to study comparative social policy. 2018 Truman Scholars Amanda Scott (C’19), a government major and history minor from Mobile, Alabama, and Shakera Vaughan (C’19), a government and sociology major from Richmond, Virginia, also spoke at the event.

Scholarship Support

The Class of 2019 received more than $123 million in scholarship support from Georgetown. The students also won numerous competitive fellowships, including:

  • 2 Truman Scholarships
  • 6 Critical Language Scholarships
  • 3 Boren Scholarships
  • 1 Yenching Scholarship
  • 1 Goldwater Scholarship
  • 1 Healy Scholarship
     

The following schools welcomed graduating students to join the community of 197,000 Georgetown alumni:
 

  • The McCourt School of Public Policy graduated more than 170 students during their Thursday commencement ceremony – including 124 masters in public policy students, 29 students in the Masters in the Public Management program, 17 students who earned masters in international development policy degrees and seven students who received degrees from the Executive Master in Policy Leadership program.
     
  • More than 1,100 graduates received their degrees during the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences commencement ceremony Friday morning, with more than 1,000 graduates receiving master of arts and master of science degrees and 109 graduates receiving doctoral degrees.
     
  • More than 900 students graduated from the McDonough School of Business Friday afternoon – including 336 undergraduates, more than 432 MBAs, 53 executive MBAs, 30 from the Executive Master’s in Leadership program and 78 graduates from the Master of Science in Finance program.
     
  • The School of Continuing Studies graduated more than 900 students Friday afternoon – bestowing 817 master of professional studies degrees, 38 executive master of professional studies degrees, 14 master of arts in liberal studies degrees, four doctor of liberal studies degrees and 32 bachelor of arts in liberal studies degrees.
     
  • Georgetown College graduated more than 850 students during its Saturday morning commencement, awarding of 694 bachelor of arts degrees and 158 bachelor of science degrees.
     
  • The School of Nursing & Health Studies graduated 112 bachelor of science students, 343 master of science students and seven doctor of nursing practice students Saturday afternoon.
     
  • The School of Foreign Service ceremony granted 323 bachelor’s degrees and 423 master’s degrees to students on Saturday.
     
  • A total of 184 newly minted M.D.s were celebrated at the School of Medicine during Sunday morning commencement exercises, including two M.D./MPH., one M.D./M.S. and two M.D./MBA.
     
  • Georgetown Law graduated more than 1,000 students at the law school’s Sunday afternoon ceremony, including 629 J.D.s, 446 LLMs and three doctor of juridical science students.
     
  • Georgetown University Qatar granted bachelor’s degrees to 64 students on May 9.
